Carta de Francisco López a los artistas, colaboradores y seguidores de “Audiópolis” y “audio-MAD” – 3 de Agosto de 2015:

Queridos amigos,

Lamentablemente, Ahora en Madrid ya no Podemos seguir con “Audiópolis” y “audio-MAD”.

José Tono Martínez ha sido cesado de forma fulminante por el nuevo Ayuntamiento como Director de CentroCentro. Es una decisión injusta, injustificada e ingrata; y con todos los visos de una triste manifestación de ideología maniquea.

La labor de Tono al frente de CentroCentro ha sido sencillamente excepcional: en poco más de tres años ha convertido un imponente edificio vacío en un centro cultural y de ciudadania (como él insiste en recalcar) repleto de contenidos culturales y sociales: con una diversidad y un eclecticismo inusitados (desde un belén napolitano del siglo XVIII hasta el Festival Madatac de Arte Digital, por poner dos ejemplos entre una multitud), abierto e imaginativo, participativo, con espacios intencionalmente preparados para ser “ocupados” y utilizados de forma libre, anti-elitista y con compromiso social, con la expresa intención de difuminar las barreras entre ámbitos culturales aparentemente o socialmente separados… y un largo etcétera que incluye ni más ni menos que llegar a ser el tercer espacio cultural más visitado de Madrid, después del Reina Sofía y el Prado; y todo ello de forma auto-suficiente económicamente (!).

En las tres últimas décadas he tenido el placer de trabajar con Tono de forma independiente y esporádica en varias ocasiones: a finales de los 90 en Buenos Aires, con conciertos y otras presentaciones en el Centro Cultural de España, que él dirigió durante varios años; a finales de los 2000 en la Expo de Zaragoza, donde él desempeñó tareas de Vice-Comisario del Pabellón de España, con una instalación sonora; y desde mediados del 2012 con una serie de conciertos e instalaciones en CentroCentro en Madrid, que él ha dirigido hasta hace unos días. En este trabajo conjunto he conocido y he aprendido de una persona extraordinaria: entusiasta, inventivo, ecléctico, iconoclasta y con unas capacidades de trabajo y gestión inusitadas.

Hace tres años Tono me invitó a organizar y comisariar una programación regular en relación con la música experimental y el arte sonoro. Así, con su apoyo incondicional y su entusiasmo, y compartiendo con él una actitud simultáneamente anti-elitista y anti-dogmática, puse en marcha la serie de eventos “Audiópolis” y el proyecto “audio-MAD”, en los que se ha presentado el trabajo de más de treinta artistas y colectivos de todo el mundo, así como más de cien artistas y creadores de Madrid. En los planes futuros ya preparados estaban, entre otros, una programación internacional para varios años con artistas que nunca han presentado su trabajo en España y la participación en conciertos de artistas de Madrid.

Desgraciadamente, en la situación actual, y por las razones expuestas, por convencimiento, principios y lealtad, me veo en la obligación moral de renunciar a mi modesto papel de organizador-comisario de estas actividades y de terminar, por consiguiente, estos proyectos que creé junto a Tono. Pretendo cumplir mis compromisos pendientes – ya programados y organizados – con (y por) los artistas invitados para este año 2015 en “Audiópolis” (eventos en Septiembre y Noviembre) y “audio-MAD” (artistas hasta Diciembre); una vez cumplidos éstos, terminará mi tarea en CentroCentro.

A todos los que nos habéis seguido y habéis colaborado con nosotros, con interés, entusiasmo y apoyo en estos proyectos, mi más sincero agradecimiento.

Letter from Francisco López to the artists, collaborators and followers of “Audiópolis” and “audio-MAD” – August 3rd 2015:

Dear friends,

Regrettably, Now in Madrid We Can no longer continue with “Audiópolis” and “audio-MAD”.

José Tono Martínez has been suddenly dismissed by the new Goverment of the City of Madrid as Director of CentroCentro. It is an unjust, unjustified and unfair decision; and one with every appearance of a sad display of Manichaean ideology.

The work of Tono directing CentroCentro has been simply outstanding: in just over three years he has transformed an imposing empty building into a cultural center with a citizen-oriented perspective (as he insists in emphasizing) that is packed with cultural and social contents: with unheard-of diversity and eclecticism (from an XVIII-century Napolitan crib to the Madatac Festival of Digital Art, just to give two among a plethora of examples), open and imaginative, inclusive, with spaces intentionally prepared to be “occupied” and freely used, anti-elitist and socially committed, with the explicit intent of blurring the boundaries among cultural realms apparently or socially separated… and a long list that includes no less than achieving the rank of third most visited cultural space in Madrid, just after the giants of the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Prado Museum; and all of this with a self-sufficient financial management (!).

Over the past three decades I have had the privilege to work with Tono in an independent and occasional fashion: back in the late 1990s in Buenos Aires, with concerts and other presentations in the Spanish Cultural Center, which he directed for several years; in the late 2000s in the International Expo of Zaragoza, where he was Vice-Curator of the Spanish Pavilion, with a sound installation; and since mid-2012 with a series of concerts and sound installations in CentroCentro in Madrid, which he has directed until just a few days ago. Working together with him, I have come to know and have learned from an extraordinary person: enthusiastic, inventive, eclectic, iconoclast, workaholic and with awesome management skills.

Three years ago, Tono invited me to organize and curate a regular series of events on experimental music and sound art. With his unconditional support and his enthusiasm, and sharing with him a completely anti-elitist and anti-dogmatic attitude, I launched the series of events “Audiópolis” and the project “audio-MAD”, in which we have presented the work of more than thirty international artists and collectives, as well as that of more than one hundred artists and creators from Madrid. Already prepared in inmediate future plans were, among others, an international program of artists who have never presented their work in Spain and the participation in concerts of local artists from Madrid.

Unfortunately, in the current situation, and for the reasons abovementioned, as a matter of conviction, principles and loyalty, I feel morally obliged to give up my modest role as organizer-curator of these activities and to finalize, therefore, these projects that I created together with Tono. I intend to fulfill my remaining pending committments –already programmed and organized- with (and for) the invited artists for the rest of 2015 in “Audiópolis” (events in September and November) and “audio-MAD” (artists until December). Once these have been realized, my work in CentroCentro will be over.

To all of you who have followed and have collaborated with us, with interest, enthusiasm and support, my most sincere thanks.
